Great Advice for New Mothers

b21The first six months after a baby is born can be the most difficult time of a new parent’s life – Dads as well as Moms – but the majority of the “burden” (perhaps not the best of terms) definitely falls on the mother. As we all know, babies are helpless, reliant on their mothers for everything from food to shelter to hygiene. We’d like to chalk up all the work that Moms do to maternal instinct, but sociologists are always quick to point out that much of our behavior is learned through nurturing.

Pillow Talk

If any mom is ever in doubt as to what she should do, it is easier today than it has ever been to find great advice, thanks to the Internet and all of the support groups that are available in cyberspace. At the top of most advice lists is a word about getting enough sleep. With most newborns, 40 winks is generally not much of an option, but if one can manage to “dream-feed” one’s infant (feeding the baby while he or she is asleep), it can result in a few extra hours of peace and quiet.

You Are What You Eat

Eating properly is also an important aspect of being a healthy mommy. Pregnancy is hard on a body, and breastfeeding similarly can have the effect of nutritional depletion on women. Vegetables, fruits and whole grain are highly recommended. Spicy foods, gassy foods and fish (for various reasons) are generally not great for either you or your baby during this time. Caffeine, while not considered any sort of health risk for babies, can make them fussy if mom takes in too much while breast-feeding.

Self-esteem is another important factor for new moms. You may not feel very good, but there is no reason to let the rest of the world see it that way! Going out to get your hair done, not to mention a relaxing pedicure, will make you look good, and that in turn will help keep your spirits up even when you are at the brink of exhaustion. Above all, new moms need to force themselves to accept the help of relatives when it is offered, and take short breaks away from the baby. You can even shop for baby items, such as batman giant wall stickers if you have a boy. No matter how instinctively opposed one may be to this idea, it still ranks as one of the most important things to do.
